Gospel music is a music genre in Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context.

Nigerian gospel artistes over the years have changed the game in the entertainment industry  as they continue to churn out melodious tunes and songs that can compete with their counterpants abroad.

Despite all this, some have stuck to it and are making waves.

1. Sinach

Sinach is the second daughter of seven children. According to Sinach “I chose that from my name Osinachi because it is easy to pronounce and catchy”She got married to Joseph Egbu on June 28, 2014 at Christ Embassy Church, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

As a songwriter she has written over 200 songs and won several awards. Her song ‘This Is Your Season’ won the Song of the Year award in 2008. Many of her songs are sung by several churches and people all over the world. One of her most popular songs is ‘I Know Who I Am’.

 

2. Frank Edwards


 

Frank Edwards was born into a family of seven. His birth name is Frank Ugochukwu Edwards. He was born in Enugu state of Nigeria. He has five siblings.

He began singing at the age of ten. He learned to play the piano from his father when he was young. In his teenage years, he became a born-again Christian. He has six albums and many hit singles to his name. His recent Album Frankinscense is really a good one with amazing songs such as ‘Agam Enye Gi Ekele among others

3. Nathaniel Bassey


Nathaniel Bassey was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He is from Ikot Ofon Ikono, Uyo local government area in Akwa-Ibom state, South-South Nigeria.
His father, Mr E Joshua Bassey, was a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly and from an early age he developed a love for both music and the gospel.

He was inspired when He saw Dr Panam Percy Paul, a prominent Nigerian gospel music icon in concert over twenty years ago and since then.

Bassey is behind the trending online engagement, #HallelujahChallenge.

4. Steve Crown


Steve Crown is probably the hottest gospel singer in the country right now. His hit single, You Are Great is a favourite of lovers of gospel music as well as many church choirs.

He is graduate of Federal Polytechnic, Zamfara State.

5. Joe Praize

Born in Edo State Nigeria, into a family of nine, Joe Praize was born again in 1991. A graduate of Social Work and Administration from the University of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, he has since become a praise and worship leader at the Believers Love World a.k.a. Christ Embassy.

According to him: “I love to lead God’s people in praise and worship, because to me, it is one of the biggest opportunities I have received from God. I do other genre of music though, but I love to praise and worship Jesus all the time. It’s a blessing to be in a position where God can trust you to lead his people in songs of praise and worship to him. So, in all, I can say I do songs that bless and reach the spirit, soul and bodies of my listeners,” he said, adding that, “I am a recording artiste, my first album was released in November 2009, I released a single, ‘Great and Mighty God’ in 2007 and the song is fulfilling its purpose.”

6. Eben


EBEN started singing in the youth choir of Winners’ Chapel in 1997, from where he went on to establish himself as one of the major vocalists in the mass choir. This resulted in him being a regular feature in the annual Shiloh events from 1999 – 2005.

In 2006, he joined Christ Embassy, and almost instantly became one of the regular faces on the Loveworld platform. Eben is still there to date, and has appeared often in major events hosted by the ministry like the Night of Bliss held in major cities in Nigeria, and also in South Africa.

7. Monique


She attended St. Kisito Primary School, Iju where she used to lead the school in songs during the morning assembly. Monique left for Iju Grammar School where she continued singing both at morning assembly and in the school choir. This afforded her the opportunity to meet many groups from other schools at one competition or the other.

Monique released her first album, New Story in 2009. It had just four songs. She released Atobi Ju (The Almighty) in 2011. Moniq did a re-mix of Oba-Gbogbo Aye (King of the Universe).

8. Glowreeyah


 

Glowreeyah Braimah is a gospel singer, lawyer and social responsibility advocate. She came up with her debut album in 2014 and has released many other singles such as Turn Around, God Alone, Miracle Worker, Covenant Time and To My Knees.

9. Sonnie Badu


Sonnie Badu began his ministry at a very young age, singing in his hometown of Ghana Accra. Sonnie was raised under a strict Christian upbringing, his father, Reverend Agyeman Prempeh, a prominent pastor in the capital state Accra would wake his children up with a cane for Church every Sunday. It was this discipline that would establish his life-long passion of service to the Lord.

He has already sang alongside the likes of international gospel artists such as Juanita Bynum, Lionel Peterson, Alvin Slaughter, Noel Robinson, Muyiwa, Sammy Okposu, Mike Aremu and other gospel ministers.
