Being press statement of the concerned populace of Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade Students on the demise of their fellow student.
The Students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade, students through their representatives sympathizes and mourns with the family of Com Akinyemi Oluwaseun popularly known as Seun Plus.
The young, promising and outstanding student who was an HND2 student of the department of accounting of the institution , was the Public relation Officer (PRO) for the National Association of Polytechnic Accounting Students (NAPAS) GAPOSA chapter and also the Director of Action and Mobilization for the National Association of Nigerian student (NANS) Ogun axis.
The deceased reportedly met his untimely death as a result of Salmonella typhi (typhoid) which was believed to have been chronic. Findings revealed that the deceased met his untimely death due to the negligence of duty from the Management of the State General Hospital, Isara-remo, Ogun state.
Medical ethics and protocol demands that medical diagnosis should be carried out in order to ascertain the cause of an illness and to give the medical personnel the knowledge of how a patient should be attended to or should be treated, in contrary to that, the deceased was shabbily attended to and discharged instead of conducting a proper diagnosis on him, they only gave him drugs and discharge him immediately which is unprofessional and inhumane.
In addition, there have been cases of such negligence of duty few years ago when an asthmatic patient who happens to be an ND2 student of the Institution was rushed down to the hospital around 5am, this same hospital reluctantly attended to this student with an excuse that the student must obtain the General Hospital card before they can proceed with treatment and they don’t have inhaler in the premises which led to the sudden death of the young promising student.
The Students showed a peaceful solidarity protest which commences from the deceased house at isara-remo area of Ogun State exactly 8:00am, with the aim of going to the state Hospital to request for the cause of his death.
But the Divisional Police Officer and few of his men from the Police Divisional Headquarter of Remo-north local government, Isara were able to calm the students down, stating that causing violence or damaging properties won’t bring solution neither will it bring back the deceased.
He further stated that the case has been reported to the state headquarters Elewe-eran Abeokuta and promised the case will be handled and the management of the hospital will be invited for proper investigation and meet with the management of the institution alongside with the student’s representatives.
Furthermore, the students articulated their needs below which they believe will bring smooth running of the institution.
1. Invitation of the Hospital Management, School Medical Center and proper investigation on the cause of the deceased death.
2. Immediate Compensation of the deceased family by the Hospital Management which must be witnessed by the Police and student Representatives.
3. Immediate restoration of the Student nion government
4. Upgrading of the polytechnic clinic and provision of adequate health facilities which include the management providing a standard ambulance vehicle for the clinic in case of emergencies.
5. Employment of more capable personnel to handle the school clinic
6. The school management should sign an MoU with a better and equipped hospital in terms of emergencies.
7. Making students welfares priority on campus.
The students further continued their peaceful solidarity protest to the school which they believed will have an answer to their request but met the NANS executive on their way to school and all moved to the school main gate. Though the students agitated to access the school premises but were denied entry by the school security operatives alongside the police officers due to the annoyance written all over the faces of the students. The NANS executives sympathizes with the students and further stated that the students shouldn’t cause any damage as it will not solve the issue at hand rather the students should use this opportunity to bring liberation.
Still with annoyance, the student requested an autopsy should be carried out on the corpse to make the cause of his death glaring in which was anonymously agreed to by the students and the security operatives, but the family of the deceased kicked against the request. After various arguments, the students agreed with the family and all moved from the school main gate to the deceased house to prepare the deceased for burial.
In support of the burial, the management gave an undisclosed amount of money to assist in getting the coffin and do some other preparation for the burial.
However, we urge all our students to be calm and understanding and not to take laws into their hands by not venturing into protest or riot act that might disrupt the peace of the polytechnic and the community at large. And also, the students should not give room to hoodlums or non-students to hijack the struggle which might truncate our already fast and timely school calendar that has been one of the score points of the present management led by the Rector Dr. I.K Oyeyinka.
Finally, the Management has promised that there will be a meeting with the institution management, the departmental presidents and other students representatives in order settle the differences.
A future date shall be announced by the Apex Student Body in Ogun State (NANS) in collaboration with all Departmental Presidents of our great citadel of higher learning to hold a general candle night procession that will be attended by comrades from all Institutions under NANS.
In conclusion, we urge our fellow student to be vigilant, and care for themselves in terms of health, security. We pray to Almighty God to put an end to this untimely death and pray our parents reap the fruits of their labours. AMEN
